If you’re new to the domain investing (even if you’re not), then you likely encounter a how cumbersome of a task it is to identify undervalued domains.

From NameJet to GoDaddy to Dynadot to SnapNames along with many more domain auction aftermarket platforms, identifying and narrowing in on undervalued domains — whether expired, public, private, or closeout — is a full time job in itself.

Thousands of domains expire in auction daily (as a subset of data is shown via DomainState.com chart below), and an unidentified number of those domains go on to be caught, or deleted and made available for hand registration (small percentage, but still happens).

In today’s tech-driven world, it’s a given to establish a digital presence for one’s personal or company brand.

Now whether or not this digital presence uses a .com or non-.com domain name is an ongoing debate — one I shall refrain from addressing today somewhat.

While most may not agree on which domain extension should represent one’s digital presence — .com has long ruled the web for personal and company branding — ALL can agree upon a digital presence being a MUST HAVE some 30 years into the Internet journey.

And while the majority agree that a brand should have a single domain name, often overlooked is whether or not a brand should build a relevant domain portfolio beyond its primary domain name.

A few days ago, I discovered one of my domains while watching and listening to DomainSherpa’s interview with Rand Fishkin about understanding Domains through the filter of SEO and Marketing.

I was checking traffic sources for KickstartCommerce.com via Google Analytics (GA) and noticed an expired domain I purchased a few months ago was registering a large sum of redirect traffic to KickstartCommerce.com.

There’s not too many people would quit or forgo business school or college to immediately start a business.

But today’s guest, Marianna Felsman, did just that decades ago on her way to becoming partner and entrepreneur of BlueAir, a thriving Austin-based Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) services company.

When entering into the domain industry with great hopes, wishes, and dreams of striking it rich as a domain investor, most domain investors would ever imagine having to mortgage their house in order for their dream to be realized.

Well, that very thought as well as few others was considered by Drew Wash — a long-time domain investor, and entrepreneur of MovingSites.com, a host of website communities designed to bring experts together.

Sometimes categorized as exact-match or partial-match domains, I encountered a geo service domain via GoDaddy’s expired domain buy-it-now/closeout auctions for a suburb of the greater Austin, Texas metro.

Although Google had issued an exact match domain update that devalued and slightly lessen exact match domains’ ranking, I decided to take a chance on developing my newly discovered geo service domain.

Little did I realize my development and SEO prowess would produce a page one ranking geo service domain website.

Years later, and many new and existing domain investors still question whether or not geo service domains are worth investing in.  That’s the question will attempt to answer in today’s podcast.
