Why the bulk-reg question still lingers, and what prior years have taught and keep teaching us.

Years ago, I asked a simple question: Is bulk hand-registering domains actually worth the time and money?

At the time, the domain world was in full hand-reg mode. Ali Zandi registered 4,600 domains in one shot. Josh at DSAD was treating bulk regs like a daily workout. Rick Schwartz was mining the phonebook for custom domains. It wasn’t just a strategy—it was the strategy.

Fast-forward years later, and the question hasn’t gone away. If anything, it’s gotten more complicated.

While many can and might share the namesake, when the name Drew is mentioned in the domain industry, there’s only one!

An often persistent personality that’s scrappy at times and outspoken most, if not all, of the time. He’s often perceived as a critically shrewd domain professional, yet just as generous and charitable.

There are not many that have shaped and continue to shape the domain industry like Drew.

A few months ago, I received an interesting email alert that contained a link to an article, Domain prices are unregulated and rising at an alarming rate, about how the days of enjoying reasonably priced domain names may be coming to an end.

Always intrigued by anything pertain to domain names in general, this article’s title got me to click hook, line, and sinker.

The domain industry can be quite an insular experience, especially if you don’t connect with others, attend meetups and conferences, or participate in online forums and blogs.

Then, the complexities of domain buying, selling, leasing, and development increase exponentially when adding in language barriers, time zone, cultural and socioeconomic differences.

It’s one thing to be a domain hobbyist, domain investor, domain developer, domain broker, or domain consultant within one’s own backyard, per se.

However, today’s podcast guest truly understands what it means to be a global domain investor in one of the world’s fastest growing major economy, India.

It’s the $64,000 — perhaps a million dollar — question most domain investors ask or ponder from time to time when purchasing and renewing domains.

If you’re a domain investor, and this question hasn’t crossed your mind, then you’re likely wasting money, time, and effort calling yourself domain investing.

With almost a decade of domain investing under my belt now, I’ve learned the importance of answering this question and operating my domain investing business with strict adherence to a strategic timeline for every investment.

Should domain investors seriously consider “sweet spot” domain investing as a viable strategy?

This very came came to mind as I watched, listened, and reviewed Paul Nicks’ — Vice President, Aftermarket at GoDaddy — NamesCon keynote: Domain Trends & Insights.

Years come and go about as fast as one breathes the precious air of life, so I’ve been told.

While 2018 has sailed on by the domain industry, we’re embarking upon the journey we’ll come to know as 2019.

And just like my wild domaining predictions of 2018, I’ve had some time to think, research, and prepare predictions for what to expect in domaining for 2019.
