The sky is fallin’! I say uh, the sky is fallin’. Quite a common phrase shouted by the doomsday collective suffering from the Chicken Little Syndrome when the economy appears to be doing too well for an extended period of time.

It’s no secret that companies of all sizes have been known to invest in domain names in addition to their core business.

Some of these companies started because of a domain upgrade for their brand and digital presence.

Others invested in domains for brand protection and to stave off the competition from owning prime digital real estate.

And in some instances, companies have solely acquired companies, thriving and dying, based on domain portfolios.

While domain investing is quite common amongst a growing number of for-profit organizations, I’ll explore a few arguments for and against non-profit organizations investing in domain names.

It’s the $64,000 — perhaps a million dollar — question most domain investors ask or ponder from time to time when purchasing and renewing domains.

Naming a product, service, company, or project can be very time-consuming, to say the least. In fact, sometimes, selecting a name can be more challenging than actually executing the idea.

Nothing kills the mood like checking the domain availability only to find out that someone else had your same thought and beat you to it first. Now what?

Should domain investors seriously consider “sweet spot” domain investing as a viable strategy?

This very came came to mind as I watched, listened, and reviewed Paul Nicks’ — Vice President, Aftermarket at GoDaddy — NamesCon keynote: Domain Trends & Insights.

If you’re like most domain investors — whether old, new, or in between, then you’ve likely explored or considered a number of domain platforms or marketplaces to stake your claim the next domain “rags to riches” story.

And while most domain investors love the thrill of buying and the adrenaline of a good auction bidding war, most have passed on or been completely in the dark on prospecting tools to increase the likelihood of quick flipping a domain into fortune.

In a day when kids, and adults too, are often consumed with and by a sea of devices, I’m intrigued when encountering companies appropriately fusing STEM, Common Core, and relation-building skills.
