And don’t forget to wash it all down with a cold Shiner Bock beer, a local favorite. Just remember, this is not to be confused with the larger Terry Black’s south of downtown, which had its own barbecue family feud.

Old Time Pit-style Barbecue Like No Other at Cooper’s.

Cooper’s Barbecue is one of my absolute Texas favorites, but here’s the catch: the original location in Llano is a solid 90-minute drive from Austin. Don’t worry though, if you’re short on time or not up for a mini road trip, they’ve got a new downtown Austin spot at 217 Congress Avenue. Trust me, it may be different from what you’ve had before, but in a good way — I can vouch for every single location!

The hidden gem of Texas BBQ (grab on the go, too!).

There’s this hidden gem of a joint inside the Austin airport as well as just a short drive from Austin in Driftwood.  It’s called The Salt Lick.  And let me tell you… you ain’t licked BBQ until you had The Salt Lick.  I hope you get to make it out to ol’ Driftwood.  If you do, then make it a family-style feast at the Driftwood location, especially if you’re rolling with a big crew. Oh, and don’t forget, you can bring your own cooler of beer and wine without any surcharges — just the way it should be. But if you don’t, grab some mouthwatering breakfast tacos or a hearty lunch before hopping on that plane. And here’s the best part—you can snag pounds of brisket or ribs to-go, packed in a special portable cooler for your flight back home. The Salt Lick’s BBQ is still top-notch, even if it’s a bit crowded now.
