Quickly Display WordPress Posts by Blog Category in Page or Post

A few weeks ago, I shared a story about a friend launching a new website and desiring a way to share a list of his WordPress posts on specific pages throughout his website.

I shared two methods to accomplish this feat using WordPress’ Display Posts Shortcode plugin.

Although a good plugin to use for displaying the latest WordPress posts on a given WordPress page, a few of you contacted me about displaying the WordPress posts by a given category.

Of course, displaying the WordPress posts by a given category using WordPress’ Display Posts Shortcode plugin is not a problem at all.

In fact, simply set category or category_id parameters within the display posts shortcode, and you’re all set.

[display-posts category_id=“123”]

However, it is a problem when using WordPress’ Display Posts Shortcode plugin causes a conflict with other plugins on your website.

So, what do you do when encountering a Plugin conflict attempting to list posts by a given category?

It’s quite common for plugins to be in conflict with one theme or another, especially when using more than ten (10) active plugins at one time.

Nevertheless, another alternative option provides the same, if not better, experience specifically for displaying WordPress posts by a given category: List Category Posts plugin.

List Category Posts is a robust plugin allowing for single, multiple, and exclusion category listings of WordPress Posts. The added bonus of the List Category Posts plugin, not provided by WordPress’ Display Posts Shortcode plugin, is the ability to display listings based on category exclusion.

I use List Category Posts for this reason of excluding categories when displaying WordPress posts.

For instance, I don’t care to reveal my daily domain auction listings via the homepage listing, so the Auctions, Buy It Now Closeouts, and Hand Registration Domains categories are removed from view.

Readers are still able to view the categories using the “Browse By Topic” selector in the sidebar.

Just like the previous plugin provides easy use and access to the shortcode, List Category Posts also provides a fully documented experience — allows the templating, HTML and CSS customization, pagination, and over 25+ different parameters for displaying blog post listings by category — for how to best use the [catlist] shortcode.

In closing, I invite you to watch a quick and easy tutorial that provides you with step-by-step guidance for using the List Category Posts plugin.
